Barry Scholl

Short Bio:  I have worked as an  advertising copywriter, performing musician, magazine editor, bookseller and now an attorney.  You might say that I was a late bloomer in terms of knowing what I wanted to do with myself!

Name:    Barry Scholl

Nickname: Cactus Barry

Where’d you grow up? Who said I grew up?

Type of music you like most: Anything with soul—Eric Clapton (especially in Cream and Derek and the Dominos), Mark Knopfler, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss, Bonnie Raitt, Bill Evans—too many to list, really.

Favorite instrument you play or just admire: The resophonic guitar (popularly known as the Dobro, until Gibson trademarked the name and started threatening to sue anyone who used it for a non-Gibson brand resonator)

What/Stuff/Thing you Like: Writing, reading, hiking, practicing guitar, green chiles, Rockford Files reruns, watching cloud formations sail overhead on a summer day in the desert

What/Stuff/Thing I don’t like: Green peppers, traffic jams, shopping malls

Favorite food: Mole poblano

Favorite book or movie?  Books: Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey, Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner, Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak. Movies: Local Hero, The Searchers, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Greatest Musical Accomplishment: Playing with the Vapor Trails.  It’s quite a feat to get four lawyers together and never have a disagreement!

Fun facts:  I always wanted to play the lap-style resonator guitar, but continually talked myself out of it, because I was convinced I didn’t have time to keep up on one instrument (the guitar)—let alone two.  But hearing Steve Lutz [a Salt Lake-based resophonic guitarist who plays in the band Tangle Ridge] convinced me to give it a try.  Although it’s probably true that I don’t have the free time to devote to practicing on two instruments, I enjoy playing both
